An important book. A beautiful story!

Winner of the Canada Council for The Arts Governor Generals Literary Award. Written by First Nation, Swampy Cree author David Robertson and simply, beautifully illustrated by award winning, Cree-Metis artist Julie Flett. These two talents have also collaborated on the childrens story, ON THE TRAPLINE.

This is a powerfully quiet story told to a Grand-daughter by her beloved Grandmother. WHEN WE WERE YOUNG deals with the compelling subject matter of Canadas Residential Schools. This story is told in matter-of-fact prose as her Grandmother answers the many questions put to her by her inquisitive Grand-daughter.

The over arching emotion is of resilience, and the importance of love and family. The authors words are made luminous by the colours and textures the artist used to showcase her love of the subject matter. Children will relate to the lovely bond between Grandmother, and Grand-daughter and especially enjoy hearing the stories and the celebration of colour and family!
